Luca Todesco has done it again. That’s right, with iOS 13 beta 2 only just released, he has already shown off a working tfp0 exploit. This discovery is a potential game-changer for jailbreaking, but it isn’t the first one that we’ve seen for iOS 13.
What’s the story?
Already a developer by the name of @jBSparkes ( twitter ) has shown us the Cydia package manager running on the first iOS 13 beta, sending shivers of anticipation through the jailbreak community. The hope is that, given Luca Todesco’s jailbreak news as well, iOS 13 is not quite as tight in terms of security that Apple may have been striving for. In fact, we could be looking at a very bright jailbreak future, back to the old days when jailbreaks were released very quickly after an iOS release.
Wait, there’s more
Of course, it’s too soon to tell. By releasing ( information ) on his twitter account, Todesco could well have tipped Apple’s hand; we are only on beta 2 after all, and there is plenty of time for them to patch any exploits before the official release.
Not usually one to release public jailbreak himself, by finding this exploit, he has given anyone who has the skills to do it the means to read the kernel memory of an iOS device and write to it too, and this is where the real power of a jailbreak system lies. In previous jailbreaks, this power has been evident, and these utilities are the ones that the community welcomes with open arms. After all, it was thanks to a tfp0 discovery by Ian Beer ( Google Project Zero ) that allowed jailbreaks for iOS 11 and iOS 12.
We’re not done yet
Based on what information Todesco has provided, we know that his offsets still need work to be updated with support for iOS 13 beta 2, but the initial news is good – we now know that the bug is still there in the iOS an Apple hasn’t yet patched it. Of course, we all know of the cat-and-mouse games Apple plays with jailbreakers – there is every chance that Apple is well aware of it and is hoping the jailbreak developers will focus their attention solely on that and not on finding other exploits; that way, they can patch it at the last minute, scuppering any chances of a quick jailbreak.
Right now, we have no real confirmation that Todesco will use what he has found to produce a jailbreak; he doesn’t usually, but it is still some good news. We know that, in theory, a jailbreak is possible and, all being well, somebody may use that exploit to deliver an early utility to the community.
