Is It Safe to Jailbreak?
When you jailbreak your iOS device, the utility that you use will break a hole in the iOS security barrier, taking you out of the safe environment Apple built for you and drop you into a new world of apps – some are excellent, others are full of malware, will crash your device and are generally not good to use. Caution is advised, and you should only use the app sources that are included with Cydia as standard as these are usually safe to use. If you update the iOS firmware on your device, it will remove the jailbreak, and there may not be a new one available for the new firmware.
What is Cydia Used For?
Cydia can be downloaded from the cydiainstaller.app. It is a package management system for iOS mobile devices. It contains several packages, each of which has a selection of apps, tweaks, and modifications that you can download and install on your jailbroken iOS device. Cydia is also referred to as a digital distribution platform for unofficial iOS software.
Is It Illegal To Use Cydia?
In the USA, it is perfectly legal to use Cydia but, should you need to return your iOS device to an Apple store for repair, Apple may void your warranty if the device is jailbroken. Usually, it would be illegal in the USA under the copyright laws the Digital Millennium Copyright Act has defined, but, for now, it has been ruled legal.
What Can Cydia Do?
Cydia is a jailbreak app store that is similar to the official iOS app store with one difference. In Cydia, you get customized apps and modifications that you can apply to your device. In Cydia, you can download these modifications, update them, and manage them efficiently on your jailbroken device, but the only way to get it is to install a jailbreak tool.
Can You Install Cydia without Jailbreak?
No. Cydia is packaged with jailbreak tools and will not work without one. However, there are plenty of Cydia alternatives that provide a great deal of what Cydia offers without having to install the jailbreak first. Check out our list of the top Cydia Alternatives that provide 3rd-party apps and games for free on your iPhone or iPad without needing to jailbreak first.
What Apps Are On Cydia?
Cydia has thousands of apps and tweaks on offer, and the following are our top picks for the absolute best:
- Auxo. So many developers have tried and mostly failed to breathe new life into iOS multi-tasking; Auxo is the best and is the one that Apple is most likely to “steal” and use as their idea …
- BiteSMS, Messages+
- 3G Unrestrictor
How Do I Install Tweaks and Themes From Cydia?
Open Cydia and look for the theme or tweak that you want. When you find it, tap it and follow the instructions on your screen to install it. For themes, you need to have WinterBoard, Snowboard, and RocketBootstrap installed, all of which are in Cydia.
I Keep Hearing about “Substrate” – What is it?
The substrate is an Application Programming Interface or API that is required for all tweaks to work. Cydia Substrate is already built into Cydia and will run all compatible tweaks.
One of My Tweaks Broke – How Do I Fix It?
Most jailbreaks from iOS 11 onwards contain a Toggle in the app. This toggle allows you to switch the broken app off so that you can go into Cydia, find it and delete it without it causing any problems on your device.
Cydia Will Not Run On My Device – What Am I Doing Wrong?
Nothing. A lot of the jailbreaks available don’t have a very high rate of success and may take several attempts to install. Keep trying; it may take you 5 or 6 tries, but eventually, you will get Cydia on your device.
