Cydia is well-known across the iOS community, but there are some who don’t know much about it; for you, we have the answers to some of the frequently asked questions about Cydia.

faq

Can Cydia Be Installed without Jailbreaking?

No, Cydia cant be installed without jailbreaking first. However, there are several alternatives to Cydia if you do not want to jailbreak your device.

Is Cydia Safe to Use on the iPhone?

Installing Cydia on your device requires you to install a jailbreak first. While these are thoroughly tested by the developers, they do need root access to your iOS firmware, and that means breaking into the security measures that Apple has in place. This does leave holes that are potential entry points for viruses or malware, but there have been few reports of this in all the years Cydia has been in existence. If you are concerned, there are plenty of Cydia alternatives that do not require a jailbreak to work but are not as comprehensive as Cydia is.

What Benefits Do I Get From Jailbreaking?

When you install a jailbreak, you are given access to Cydia, a third-party app store that contains many tweaks and modifications that can help you to get your device looking and working just how you want it. These tweaks have not been authorized by Apple but, because the jailbreak has broken through the security, you can use them. You can install themes, new ringtones,  tweaks that add extra functionality to the stock apps on your device, and modifications that add a new feature.

Is It Safe to Jailbreak?

When you jailbreak your iOS device, the utility that you use will break a hole in the iOS security barrier, taking you out of the safe environment Apple built for you and drop you into a new world of apps – some are excellent, others are full of malware, will crash your device and are generally not good to use. Caution is advised, and you should only use the app sources that are included with Cydia as standard as these are usually safe to use.  If you update the iOS firmware on your device, it will remove the jailbreak, and there may not be a new one available for the new firmware.

Is Jailbreaking Illegal?

No, it is not. In 2012, The Library of Congress ruled it as a legal exemption to the DMCA, or Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and that makes it legal to do.

What is Cydia Used For?

Cydia can be downloaded from cydiainstaller.app. It is a package management system for iOS mobile devices. It contains several packages, each of which has a selection of apps, tweaks, and modifications that you can download and install on your jailbroken iOS device. Cydia is also referred to as a digital distribution platform for unofficial iOS software.

Is It Illegal To Use Cydia?

In the USA, it is perfectly legal to use Cydia but, should you need to return your iOS device to an Apple store for repair, Apple may void your warranty if the device is jailbroken. Usually, it would be illegal in the USA under the copyright laws the Digital Millennium Copyright Act has defined but, for now, it has been ruled legal.

Is Cydia Free?

Cydia is free to use with any jailbreak tool. It is a third-party app store and iOS installer for tweaks, but you do need the jailbreak to get it. Alternatives that do not require Cydia but are also free include TweakBox, an external store that contains flash apps, tweak, unofficial games and thousands of other apps from the iOS app store for free. Another alternative is the web-based iNoCydia, another free store that contains many of the Cydia features,

What Can Cydia Do?

Cydia is a jailbreak app store that is similar to the official iOS app store with one difference. In Cydia, you get customized apps and modifications that you can apply to your device. In Cydia, you can download these modifications, update them, and manage them efficiently on your jailbroken device, but the only way to get it is to install a jailbreak tool.

Can You Install Cydia without Jailbreak?

No. Cydia is packaged with the jailbreak tools and will not work without one. However, there are plenty of Cydia alternatives that provide a great deal of what Cydia offers without having to install the jailbreak first. Check out our list of the top Cydia Alternatives that provide 3rd-party apps and games for free on your iPhone or iPad without needing to jailbreak first.

What Apps Are On Cydia?

Cydia has thousands of apps and tweaks on offer, and the following are our top picks for the absolute best:

  • Auxo. So many developers have tried and mostly failed to breathe new life into iOS multi-tasking; Auxo is the best and is the one that Apple is most likely to “steal” and use as their idea …
  • BiteSMS, Messages+
  • 3G Unrestrictor
  • iFile
  • Merge
  • NoNewsIsGoodNews
  • Sparrow+
  • TetherMe
  • Zephyr

Is Cydia Impactor A Jailbreak?

cydia impactor screen

No, it is not. Cydia Impactor is a useful tool that we use to sign IPA files or apps and install them on our iOS devices without a jailbreak. It is a pretty incredible piece of software, working on Mac, Windows, and Linux platforms, and it can do several things on Android and iOS mobile devices.

How Do You Add Sources?

Adding new sources to Cydia is pretty straightforward; just follow these steps:

  1. Launch Cydia on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap on Manage > Sources, and you will see a list of sources already included in Cydia iphone x cydia repo source_app download
  3. In the top right corner of the screen, tap Edit
  4. In the top left, tap Add
  5. Type in the source URL that you want to add as a repository in Cydia
  6. Click on Add Source cydia repo source add iphone x _app download

How Do I Install Tweaks and Themes From Cydia?

Open Cydia and look for the theme or tweak that you want. When you find it, tap it and follow the instructions on your screen to install it. For themes, you need to have WinterBoard, Snowboard, and RocketBootstrap installed, all of which are in Cydia.

I Keep Hearing about “Substrate” – What is it?

Substrate is an Application Programming Interface or API that is required for all tweaks to work. Cydia Substrate is already built into Cydia and will run all compatible tweaks.

Do I Need To Pay For My Cydia Tweaks?

While many of the tweaks and apps in Cydia are free, there are some that require a small payment. You don’t have to use these if you don’t want to. Just keep in mind that the developers give their time and effort freely to develop these tweaks, and many will place a donation button on their website. Again, it is your choice whether to donate or not.

One of My Tweaks Broke – How Do I Fix It?

Most jailbreaks from iOS 11 onwards contain a Toggle in the app. This toggle allows you to switch the broken app off so that you can go into Cydia, find it and delete it without it causing any problems on your device.

Cydia Will Not Run On My Device – What Am I Doing Wrong?

Nothing. A lot of the jailbreaks available don’t have a very high rate of success and may take several attempts to install. Keep trying; it may take you 5 or 6 tries, but eventually, you will get Cydia on your device.

  1. I had helix but after two weeks I woke up one morning and grabbed my phone and found that helix wasn’t working. All the tweaks I had were off and everything was back to normal. I went in to the Helix app to hit the jailbreak button to turn it back on because I thought that my phone must have died or turned off somehow but the app crashed and I couldn’t even enter it. I also tried going into Cydia but that crashed too. I was so confused and didn’t know what was going on. I ultimately deleted Helix a week later and tried to redownload it from my Mac to see if that would fix everything. Once I selected my phone on Cydia impactor and tried to download it, it wouldn’t download and some notification came up and said that it wasn’t available or something. So now I can’t even download Helix back, but I still have Cydia on my phone. But, I also can use that either because it crashes every time I enter it. Just a white screen and then boom back to the homepage.

  3. Maybe these are dumb newbie questions but they don’t seem to be answered here so I’ll ask anyway: If I jailbreak my iPad, will I lose access to the official Apple Store? Will the store have any way of knowing it’s being used by a jailbroken device? And assuming I can still access the Apple Store, will installing an app from it damage the jailbreak?

    • hi , no. Apple has no way to detect your device that has been jailbroken. However, some apps send info back and forth that can identify usage of jailbreak apps.

  5. Hi, this is Pheonix, right? I used this just a couple of days ago and have this problem with Evasion. So I think my jailbreak is up to date but perhaps Evasion has been left over from a previous jailbreak?

I have the latest version of Phoenix, cydia starts but prompts for essential upgrades which never happen because Evasion (perhaps from a previous jailbreak?) can’t be removed.

  11. Hello Team Cydia
Firstly thank you for the years of hard-work you guys have put into the nurturing and involvement of the app. I managed to successfully jailbreak my iphone 5c ios 10.3.3 32bit device via h3lix.
Accidentally I deleted I think it was the bigdaddy repo or a part of a repo that I should not of, this led to an error saying something about a deleted kernel? or something like that I forgot exactly. So I proceeded to delete the cydia app because my device was being strange.
Unfortunately though I do not have ifiles on my device to SSH and I cannot reinstall the cydia app even though I successfully re jailbreak with h3lix?? I have tried to uicache about 100x no avail, Iv tried reset and re break etc but no avail. Could you please advise me how I can reinstall cydia? If it is possible I dont mind paying some ne to do it for me.
    Kind regards

  15. I deleted something called cydia installer and many sources in cydia on my iPhone 7 iOS 12.4{jailbroken by uncover} (I just wanted to delete cydia by deleting it’s files) and after tha t it restarts and when I opened it , it tells me hello in all languages and press home button to open , I entered my password (of the lock screen) and then it says update is complete and I press continue and it says choose a wifi network and when I choose it ,it doesn’t connect and says “No network connection” and i pressed ok .when I press Next it loads till it says “welcome to iPhone ” . When I press get started it shows my apps and nothing changed but after pretty much 0.3 seconds it returns to the Hello screen and the same thing happens every time I try to open it even I tried to press any app nothing happens and it goes back to the Hello screen . I did a glitch : when I press get started and as much faster as I can tried to press the power button and it goes in sleep mode and when I open it ,it does not return to the Hello screen but nothing works , I can just see my apps and games and when i press the games and apps…, the icons goes black and return regular but the calculator and the phone app it opens but the screen goes 1- white for the phone app. 2-black for the calculator app and it lags and kicks me out from the app , when I press the home button during the glitch it returns to the Hello screen. I hope you’ll read my comment and thanks

  20. If I download Cydia will I be able to delete or uninstall any and all spyware apps that someone may have put on my iPhone 6s Plus iOS version 12.3.1 without my consent or knowledge

    Reply
    • first and foremost, iOS is a very secure OS. Nobody could have installed anything on your device in the first place without you knowing. Second, Cydia allows you to install unofficial apps. Its not an anti-virus or anti-spyware. Yes, after installing Cydia, someone can install spyware on your device if you download stuff from unknown and unreliable sources, as Cydia opens all doors ( good , grey and bad ). Hence users are asked to use Cydia with care and all knowledge of what they are doing.
